The past few years have seen a growing interest in genealogy, and for many people, it has been somewhat difficult to find the people they are looking for,  as the information is spread across many different documents and books.

The most important source when it comes to uncovering one’s roots is undoubtedly the church registers, which document births, baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths and funerals, and – to an extent – people who have moved to and from the parish.

Censuses also give a good overview of each household, stating who lived together during a specific year. Often several generations lived together, parents and children first and foremost, but also relatives, servants, and others.

When the graveyard registers were implemented in the 1870s, it was possible to get an overview of where the dead were buried.

Other important sources are village histories that describe the village, place names and the people that lived and live there. It is a very important part of our history.

It is also worth noting the causes of death. Church registers sometimes mention causes of death, but not always. The Danish National Archives in Copenhagen contain a lot of information concerning Faroese circumstances, including certificates of death that the Danish Health Authority has registered and used to the extent that they were available. It is not uncommon to see discrepancies between the cause of death listed in the church register and in the certificate of death signed by the doctor.
