Although it often has been mentioned the Latin Academy in Tórshavn has never been properly dealt with in writing. After the bishopric was discontinued in 1550 it was no longer possible to educate priests in the Faroes. The old Catholic system was dismantled and all theological studies were moved to Copenhagen. There was however a need for some preperation for this higher form of education and therefore the students first went to the Latin academy in Tórshavn.

Professor Hans Jacob Debes tells a vivid story about this academy in his book The Academy of Tórshavn. The book is carried by the accessible writing style of Hans Jacob as well as his ability both as a storyteller and knowledgable historian.
