Freedom is an abused concept. In world history as well as Faroese history. Just in the same way as democracy is freedom, and thus a positive word. Therefore it is a label which all people of authority use about that which they stand for. One label reads “economic freedom”. Another one reads “personal freedom”. A third one “free market forces”. A fourth one “political freedom”. And so on. If freedom is everything which is called freedom then freedom is everything. Which makes it an empty notion. This is most likely the reason why this concept has lost its value in the political debate. It has been abused to the extent that its meaning is vague and unclear. This also seems to be the reason why we now hesitate to talk about freedom. But if we do not dare to talk about freedom then we truly are not free at all.
