Pedro Páramo

Juan Preciado promises his dying mother that he will search for his father, Pedro Páramo. He goes back to the village Comala whence his mother fled many years ago. Comala turns out to be an abandoned village, only populated by memories and mirages. Whispering and murmuring voices ecco in the empty streets and the voices reveal fractured secrets from the past - and most of all the story of a tyrant who has ruled with a heavy hand.

Gabriel García Márquez says about Pedro Páramo: Never since the shocking night when I read Metamorphosis by Kafka has a book affected me in this manner.

Jorge Luis Borges: Pedro Páramo is one of the best novels in Spanish literature and in world literature as a whole.

Susan Sontag: Rulfo’s novel is not only one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, it is also the novel which has had the most effect on contemporary literature.
