Undir egið borð is one of the most popular novels by Haldór Laxness. Is has been translated into many languages and has been published throughout the world. Several hundred thousand copies have been sold in the USA. The novel sparked a fierce political debate in Iceland when it was published in 1934-35 and today it may be said to be the greatest cultural possession in Iceland and maybe the greatest Nordic novel ever.
