Úr myrkrinum

Kinna Poulsen
“Úr myrkrinum” (Out of the darkness) is the title of a new book about the artist, Tóroddur Poulsen, written by Kinna Poulsen. The title refers to the artist’s yearning to step into the light, but the book is also a portrait of an avant-garde artist and of the times in which he is living.

Kinna Poulsen has followed the artist and reviewed his work for twenty years, and this book is also based on all the material she has written about him in the period between 1997-2017. The book is about poetry, pictorial art, and music by Tóroddur Poulsen, and about the various ways in which his work has been celebrated.

Since he published the poetry collection Botnfall in 1984, Tóroddur has had almost forty other publications in addition to lithographic prints and more.

In 2013, he was awarded the Faroese Cultural Prize, and it was right after the ceremony, when the tense silence in Spaniastova in Klaksvík was broken by a nervous fit of laughter, that the idea of writing this book materialised.

During a special and highly discussed TV newscast a month prior to the prize ceremony, Tóroddur had firmly advised the Minister of Culture to stay away from his exhibition. Now, they were both present in Spaniastova. One was to present this public prize, the other was to accept it.

The public’s behaviour at the ceremony in Klaksvík only deepened Kinna’s conviction that this was something in need of assessment and presentation.

Because Tóroddur, as the avant-garde artist that he is, throughout his career in the arts always has been in opposition to established society, the amount of provocations is large and, apparently, so obvious, that it warrants comment, even in an otherwise pleasant and celebratory tribute speech, such as the one delivered by Professor Turið Sigurðardóttir in honour of the prize winners in Spaniastova. She said: “…at times, the satire lacks perspective and artistic tolerance, it is rigid, just like the culture, Tóroddur so frequently criticises.”
