Nakrir tættir úr lívi V. U. Hammershaimbs (paperbook)

Savnsrit

It is fascinating to read about Hammershaimb’s life, as he in old age looks back and describes the road he has taken.

His life was multifarious and interesting. He was courageous, had an exciting life, and oftentimes a heavy workload.

As a young man, he performed a feat rivalled by no one since. He would not accept the discrimination against his mother tongue in a Danish school system, that had been imposed on the Faroese people.

He wrote about the situation in a Danish magazine – about the unfairness and the Danish Kingdom’s lack of respect for the Faroese language. His article did not go by unnoticed, and a few years later, with help from academics at the University of Copenhagen, he had codified the written language, which we by and large continue to use to this day.

As a young student as well as later in life, he wrote about daily life in the Faroes, he collected and wrote down stories, folklore, ballads, and created a Faroese grammar. All of it achievements, he was highly celebrated for.

He served as a priest in Kvívík and Nes and was later appointed dean. The work he completed in his role as dean is, among other things, described in this book.

When age started taking its toll, he moved to Denmark to work as a priest. Conditions were considerably better there.
