This a book about a funeral, beginning in Shanghai and ending up in Sumba. It is also the story of a curious diary and the organisation International Dwarfs Association, as well as the events that transpire while searching for the relatives of deceased Chinese fishermen. First and foremost, however, Jarðarferðin (The Funeral) is a portrayal of the friendship between Symfor Thomsen and Eigil Tvibur.

It is while Symfor is carried on the back of his friend that he whispers that this is likely the end. Eigil replies that everything will be better once they reach Sumba.

- Will you take me all the way to Sumba? Symfor asks.

Eigil replies:

- We have been friends for half a century.
