Afturgongur

Henrik Ibsen

With Afturgongur (Ghosts) Ibsen illustrates how entrenched beliefs that are inherited through the middle-class shackle individuals, constricting their freedom. Osvald, the son of the household, serves as the author’s voice and attempts to pave the way for artists and joie de vivre in defiance of theological norms.

Both Osvald and his mother, Helena, challenge the worldview of the priest, Manders, prompting him to question the foundation of his convictions. The priest embodies the blindness of those staunchly defending the powers of their society.

In a letter sent to Georg Brandes dated 3 January 1882, Ibsen notes: „The storm that has followed Ghosts was only to be expected. But I felt that I should not attempt to prevent it; had I done so, I would have been a turncoat.”

This play, described by Ibsen as a family drama in three acts, was initially considered scandalous, and none of the mainstream theatres dared to stage it. He had also received criticism for Eitt dukkuheim (A Doll’s House) from 1879, where Nora leaves her husband and children. In this play, he depicts the consequences when a wife chooses not to leave her doomed marriage.
