Í stovuni sofu, í køki komfýr

Jóan Pauli Joensen

Í stovuni sofu, í køki komfýr (Sofa in the living room, Stove in the kitchen) describes the living conditions and way of life in the Faroe Islands spanning from the Middle Ages to 1960, with special emphasis placed on the period between 1800 and 1960. From longhouses and turf cottages to contemporary homes. The book describes how foreign influences gradually prompted people to improve their homes. From roykstova (smoke room) to glasstova (the best room), from earth floors to wooden floors.

The book describes the architectural transformations that took place when men journeyed abroad to learn about construction. It explains how social classes influenced the homes and each room, how we turned into consumers, buying lamps and stoves, fine furniture and kitchen appliances, china, decorative items such as potted plants, photographs, and other ornaments, as well as curtains to cover windows. Everything that could be displayed to showcase who we were.

The new houses were influenced by the middle-class lifestyle that characterised our neighbouring countries. The houses had living rooms, dining rooms, guest bedrooms, and kitchens with a pantry.

The most lavish homes boasted additional features, such as a trimpil (a continuation upwards of the outer wall of the house outside a stud construction), an attic and an iron roof. The introduction of cooking stoves, plumbing, petrol lamps, primus stoves and other mass-produced everyday items further modernised kitchens.

It is a tremendously interesting book, that examines all of these changes through an ethnological lens, and it is all masterfully described by Joan Pauli.
