Sune Joensen

Sune Joensen was born in 1931 and grew up in Sandvík.

Life in the village was shaped by the fact that the majority of the men were fishermen. They would leave the village by the turn of the month between February and March, and, with the exception of a brief stop between the expeditions to the south and Greenland, would be gone until the end of September. Sune joined his first fishing expedition in 1947.

From 1950 to 1992, Sune worked at Føroya Brunatrygging (Faroese Fire Insurance Company), the final 10 years of which he acted as manager. It is during this period that he starts writing about memories from his youth and his experiences.

He depicts everyday life here on the islands before we really entered modern times. A time characterised by poor infrastructure, smacks, peat cutting, casting seines, old traditions and unique celebrations.

Things were different back then. Life was lived at a different pace, the expectations were different as were the challenges and circumstances.

Sune Joensen skillfully depicts this period in his book.
