Álvarsama spælið

Hjalmar Söderberg

In 2012, on the 100th anniversary of The Serious Game, the renowned Swedish author Henning Mankell wrote a reflective piece about the novel titled "En av de allra yppersta", meaning "one of the very best."

"For me, there is no doubt that this is one of the greatest romance novels to have been written in the Swedish language. We might also say that this novel brought the modern age into Swedish literature."

The novel revolves around Arvid Stjärnblom and his relationship with two women, Lydia Stille and Dagmar Randel.  The novel takes place over the course of 15 years, from the summer of 1897 to the autumn of 1912. The story concludes a few months after the Stockholm Summer Olympics

Lydia and Arvid are young when they meet by chance during the summer of 1897. While the encounter hardly causes sparks to fly for Lydia, Arvid feels as if something significant is about to happen in his life. But is he too young and inexperienced to commit to someone?

They drift apart. Lydia marries an older man. Arvid meets another woman, whom he marries. The marriage soon turns into routine and repetition. The rush of passion that Arvid once felt with Lydia is but a faint mirage.

The years pass. In 1907, Lydia and Arvid once again meet by chance when they find themselves sitting next to each other at the opera. Now the two can unite in the fiery passion that they never consummated.

But all is not well. Suddenly, Arvid learns that Lydia is seeing one of his coworkers at the paper. Arvid comes to the realisation that their relationship will always be threatened and will not lead to a happy ending.

The Serious Game has been published in new editions in different languages, most recently in Danish, Norwegian and German. Five years ago the novel was turned into a film directed by Pernille August.
