Fýra kvartettir

T.S. Eliot

T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets in Faroese

T. S. Eliot (1888 – 1965) was one of the foremost English lyrical poets of the twentieth century and a pioneer of modernist poetry. Eliot’s last great work, Four Quartets, has now been translated to Faroese by poet and novelist, Carl Jóhan Jensen and newly published by Sprotin as “Fýra kvartettir”.

The Four Quartets are a spiritual journey through European cultural tradition and history, with four interlinked meditations on man's relationship with time, the universe and the divine.  T. S. Eliot was first recognised for his 1915 modernist masterpiece, the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock. Following this unique elegy to love, his subsequent works also became widely acclaimed as some of the best poems ever written in the English language, including the Waste Land (1922), The Hollow Men (1925), Ash Wednesday (1930) and finally Four Quartets in 1943.

Sprotin is proud to publish the first ever Faroese translation of Eliot’s Four Quartets, which is also the first publication in book form of a work by T.S. Eliot in Faroese. The translation is a significant addition to the ever-growing corpus of literary works in Faroese, and yet another example of the linguistic artistry and literary acuity of Carl Jóhan Jensen.
