Ross og fólk
This book commemorates the 80th anniversary of Føroya Ríðingarfelag (The Faroese Riding Society) on February 25, 2023.
The society was founded in Tórshøll on Niels Finsensgøta in Torshavn in 1943. The founders were Jens Pauli av Reyni, Aksel Hansen, and Leivur Trónd Hansen.
The society aimed to foster equestrian activities, maintain riding trails, and organise competitions. The goal was also to establish a new riding ground.
The first Faroese riding competitions took place between 1921 and 1929 and then again from 1936. Initially held on Sundsvegurin from 1921 to 1927, the venue moved to Velbastaðvegurin in 1928, where it remained until 1970, when Føroya Ríðingarfelag acquired a new riding ground in Marknagil.
An agreement between Tórshavnar Kommuna and Føroya Ríðingarfelag in 1977 led to the first stables being erected in Havnadalur in 1981, followed by a clubhouse in 1994, and finally a riding hall in 2007.
The book explains all of this, in addition to describing what the conditions for horse-keeping and breeding were previously like in the Faroes. Several competition results and rare anecdotes from Ólavsøka have also been included, alongside with many historical images of renowned people.
