The tales about Sára Malena in Skúgvi and her peculiar fate are many. She lived in the 19th century. A time steeped in superstition and closed-mindedness.
She was an unruly child - strange and uncontrollable to such an extent that her own father nearly took her life.
Later, she was accused of witchcraft, and as a result, she was feared and shunned by the people around her. Sára Malena was isolated and ignored, mocked and excluded, never experiencing love. Most of the stories about her imply that she was a more than capable woman.
How does a woman survive in a small village, where people are convinced that her words are the reason that boats go missing and men die in strange ways? The widows and orphans are left with grief, bitterness, and terror … and all the while, stories are spreading all around the country.
