Einar Andrias Lund

The story depicts the 33-year old Mikael Skrent, who in many ways seems happy. He is in Oslo on his way to his friend’s exhibition opening. As he makes his way to the exhibition incidents from the past begin to flash before him, incidents that have pushed him out into a destructive whirlwind of strange behaviour, anger and confusion.

He finds existence pointless. He struggles with the love he lost ten years earlier. A feeling of disgust comes over him when he is in bed with other women.

He has been abnormally preoccupied with himself and cold and callous towards anyone who doesn’t benefit him. But he has been given his share and abundantly so, not in the least from himself.

A much-discussed novel which describes the art world and its environment which reflects the rest of society and the values of the West, where appearance and egoism overshadow true values and lead to a sick sense of emptiness and worthlessness.
