The Serpent’s Way is a multiple award-winning masterpiece, which takes place in old Swedish rural society. When the author read the book on the radio, a record-breaking amount of listeners tuned in. Shortly after that Bo Widerberg made a film adaptation of the novel.

The widow, Tea, lives in a village between Lycksele and Norsjö in the Västerbotten area. She has no income and due to her poverty she is forced to pay her landlord with her body.

Her son Janna tells her story. He talks of debts and demands that are mercilessly passed on from generation to generation but which finally are laid to rest after an unexpected event.

“So it is said, that in the beginning the human body was the only thing that could be used when something was to be judged. For with the measure that you measure, it will be measured to you, so You have said Lord, and those words were also meant for Karl Orsa.”

In addition to this novel, other well-known works by Torgny Lindgren are Merabs Skönhet (Merhab’s Beauty), Bathsheba, Legender, Ljuset (The Light), Till Sanningens Lov, Hummelhonung (Hummel Honey), I Brokiga Blads vatten, Pölsan, Döden ett Bekymmer, Maten, Minnen.
