Sverri kongur 1
In the middle of the 12th century, a boy grew up in Kirkjubø, who later would become famous—Sverri, the son of Gunhild. But who was the father? Was it Unas, the brother of bishop Rói? Was it an unknown Norwegian? – or was it he, who his mother claimed him to be on her deathbed: Sigurð Munn, the king of Norway?
Sverri and his friend Eyðun studied for the priesthood in Kirkjubø, but something happened that forced them to leave. And from the day they arrived in Norway, they joined ranks with those fighting the brutal Erling Skakka and his son, king Magnus.
They were called Birkibeinar, these who fought the oppressors. And they needed a leader. Sverri knew his call – but was he really the son of a king, who must take this burden on his shoulders? And did he have it in him to lead the Birkibeinar to victory? Doubt and courage fought for Sverri’s mind, and at last he had to decide.
Sverri kongur 1 - Maðurin av útoyggj (The Man from the Distant Isle) is the first volume of three about king Sverri.
