Sær - ein fuglabók av gloymsku
Somewhere else or not somewhere else?
Growing up in Brekkugøta in Tórshavn mid-twentieth century in a confusion of spiritual and emotional contradictions, a young woman decides to find herself somewhere else.
Determined to be free and liberated of her roots, she leaves the Faroe Islands in the late fifties, and step by step she traverses two continents all the way down to the dark heart of Africa, the Congo.
Ten years later, in August 1968, in the shadow of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, the woman is back in Tórshavn on an errand for a Danish magazine. She is to write about a man from her past, who, despite authorities claiming otherwise, may have been murdered onboard a long liner.
Tórshavn is covered in heavy fog, and during a long sleepless night at a hotel by Kongabrúgvin, the woman comes to terms with her past and the passing, and this has consequences for the future.
The novel Sær – ein fuglabók av gloymsku digs uncomfortably deep into accepted notions of Faroese identity.
