In 1920, Sanna Apol (born Reinert) from Norðadalur was newly married and had moved to the Netherlands with her Dutch husband. Sanna never felt at home in the Netherlands and felt stuck in the role as a mountain girl in a flat country.

In her diary, she writes about an inner sense of ambivalence, a struggle between nature and culture on a personal as well as societal level.
