In a remote Polish village close to the Czech border lives Janina. She looks after vacation homes in the area, which are empty during the winter. In her spare time, she enjoys reading horoscopes, translating poems by William Blake, and observing the wildlife.

She clearly enjoys animals more than people. She bitterly watches hunters kill the noble animals. Suddenly, a hunter dies, and then another one under highly mysterious circumstances. The police are at a loss, but Janina thinks she can see a pattern unfolding. The book examines the unpleasant border between insanity and reason, justice and tradition. It seems to ask the question: Who are the people that we consider reasonable?
