Most of the stories which William Heinesen wrote are set in the Faroes; and more than anything in Tórshavn where the author lived for the most of his life. Many of the stories depict a lost time - the period from 1900 until the first World War – a time when our capital still was a peaceful and quiet small town with turfed roofs, surrounded by the fresh smell of grass and without any motor traffic on all roads. The town was however not a paradise on earth. The problems were just different ones than today. Yet the human character – which is the delicate and complicated phenomenon which interests the author – has deep down probably always had the very same attributes.
