Ferð mín móti himli

Thornton Wilder

This is a peculiar story of how the good fares and under what terms it must exist in a world leavened by sin.

The protagonist is a traveling salesman, a born-again man. He relentlessly pursues good deeds and being righteous. He realises how difficult it is to be a true Christian in a world that stands in opposition to everything that Christian values represent.

Wherever he goes, he preaches, enraging people with his pointed fingers.

The story is set in the Great Depression, when our salesman embraces voluntary poverty together with the suffering hordes. He does not smoke, drink or play cards—couldn’t even dream of doing so. He refuses the interests the bank awards him, and earnings he does not need, he gives away. He does not work Sundays, does not even embark on a train on the day of rest. He makes no compromises. He seeks to embody purity in a world gone off course. He wants to resurrect true values.

On his many journeys he enters every place imaginable, meeting all kinds of folk – in truth, he makes a journey into the American soul.
