Loysingarpolitikkur í 1940-árunum

Jákup Thorsteinsson

Jákup Thorsteinsson (1943–2009) was an exceptionally good Faroese historian. His doctoral thesis, Et Færø som Færø. Studier i Færøernes forfatningsmæssige stilling i forhold til Danmark 1834–1852 (A Faroes as the Faroes. Studies in the Constitutional Relationship between the Faroes and Denmark 1834-1852) was ground-breaking in Faroese historiography.

When he died suddenly in 2009, Thorsteinsson had worked on writing the history of Tjóðveldi (a separatist republican party). This first volume of two is not only a part of the history of Tjóðveldi but also an important part of recent Faroese political history. Thorsteinsson was convinced it was possible to write impartial history, and it is evident in this volume, that he has not veered off course.
Hans Andrias Sølvará

This first volume depicts republican ideals and politics in the 1940s. The volume begins with Erlendur Patursson’s St. Olaf’s Wake speech, held in 1938. This is the first time that the separatist republican agenda is set out as a complete political, social, commercial, economic and cultural idea, and it became the foundation for politics up to our own day.

The author discusses the peculiar political situation, in which the so-called “asphalt Faroese” found themselves, when they were cut off from their homeland in Denmark from 1940 to 1945. He depicts the grand political plans and the high goals, they set themselves when returning home just prior to the referendum of 1946.

The book continues with a comprehensive narration and analysis of the political situation and events in the Faroes after the second world war: the broad political interests, the socio-economic situation, the struggle between the chief Danish administrator of the islands and the Faroese Parliament, the British occupation of the Faroes and the development of the political parties. He also discusses the negotiation after the war, the referendum in 1946, when the Faroese parties abandon their commitments, the process that resulted in home rule and how independence minded people begin to publish their own paper and found a political party.
