Gösta Berlings - søga og ævintýr
”At last, the reverend stood behind the holy pulpit … ”
Gösta Berling finally managed to deliver a sermon sober but is nevertheless dismissed from his post due to his vain and wanton life. Disheartened and demoralised, he resolves to drinking himself to death, but the Major’s wife finds his dying body in a snowdrift … He joins those who live with the Major’s wife at her farm. Their only duty is to spread joy around them. And at that, they excel.
But someone is spreading discord, colluding with the devil. The bliss is fading, people start deceiving and killing. A great battle has begun between love, joy, and loyalty on the one side, and greed, selfishness, and malice on the other.
In 1909, Selma Lagerlöf received the Nobel Prize in Literature for this remarkable novel.
