When, in 2015, the doctors notice something unexpected in a scan of 38-year-old Annvør’s brain, her sister, Margit, and their mother catch the first plane to Copenhagen to be by her side.
For a while now, Annvør has been struggling with severe headaches, and consequently, she has failed to meet her Ph.D. deadlines. She has become very forgetful.
Over the next few days at the national hospital, Annvør’s memory continues to deteriorate, and Margit decides to write her a diary.
“I will be your memory while you are ill. When you recover, you can read the diary and update yourself. Discover what you and your family have been through.”
“You and I, we look out for each other. I am touched by how deeply you have always loved me. That love can shine through the cancer gives me hope. Makes me want to dance on top of the cancer. Squash it under my feet. Kill it.”
Góða systir (Dear sister) is a heartrending diary from one sister to another. The book is personal, and in a down-to-earth manner, it touches upon subjects such as family, disease, treatment, faith, the meaning of life, humour, sorrow, recovery, and hope, which patients as well as their loved ones can relate to.
