Hjarta myrkursins

Joseph Conrad

Hjarta myrkursins (Heart of Darkness) is a chilling and shocking account of the atrocities committed in the Congo around the time when colonialism reached its peak in the 19th century.

The story outlines the turmoil resulting from the economic, social, and political plundering of Africa.

At the same time, it provides an insight into the shocking practices, that this led to.

The narrator, Marlow, travels up the Congo River for a Belgian trading company. Deep inside the country, he meets the mysterious Kurtz, an ivory trader, who has somehow managed to gain divine status among the inhabitants of the area. Kurtz is fascinating in his own way, at the same time as he provokes deep resentment.

There, Marlow finds himself face to face with all the corruption and all the chagrin living in the heart of this person.
